What Are Termites?

Termites are best described as wood-destroying insects. Although they are sometimes mistakenly called white ants, termites are entirely different insects. There are three main types of termites: dampwood termites, drywood termites, and subterranean termites.

Dampwood termites are commonly found in heavily forested areas and prefer wood with high moisture content.

Drywood termites live in very dry wood and are relatively rare in the United States.

Subterranean termites are the most destructive species. They require moist environments and typically live in the soil.

The Danger of Termites

Termites cause an estimated five billion dollars in property damage each year. Among all household pests, termites are the most costly and destructive. They feed on cellulose found in wood and plant materials, meaning they can slowly but literally consume the structural components of your home. Termites can enter buildings through the ground or by air, making early detection and prompt treatment essential.

Below are the types of termites most commonly found in homes.

Types of Termites

Subterranean Termites

Subterranean termites cause more damage than any other termite species and require specialized treatment methods. They live in the soil and build massive underground colonies, connecting to homes through mud tubes and wooden structures. These termites can destroy wood and structural timbers rapidly.

Dampwood Termites

Dampwood termites are typically found in wood with high moisture levels. They are rarely found in homes because most residential wood does not contain enough moisture to support them. Unlike subterranean termites, they do not require contact with soil and are usually found in damp or decaying wood.

Drywood Termites

Drywood termites infest dry wood, including hardwood floors, furniture, and structural timbers. They do not require contact with the soil and live entirely within the wood they consume. While they cause damage more slowly than subterranean termites, they are among the most common species found inside homes.
